Porcelain is just one type of dental crown that we have available, but it is one of the most popular options among our patients. It is affordable and has decent strength compared to composite resin. Though metals are stronger, they can also cause discomfort for patients with sensitivity or allergies. Porcelain's greatest benefit, though, is its cosmetic appeal. Porcelain can be very durable, affordable, and can also look like a natural tooth. That said, it is not recommended for the back teeth since it is a bit more fragile than metal.
Types of Porcelain Crowns
We have a few different types of porcelain crowns available. The first way they differ is that you can get either a traditional or a same-day crown. Traditional crowns take a few weeks to manufacture, but they are preferred because they fit better and look more natural. Same-day crowns still look great, and you receive them on the same day as your treatment. For traditional crowns, you receive a temporary crown while you wait for the permanent crown to be crafted.
We also have different sizes of porcelain crowns available. Full crowns are available for those who need the entire tooth to be covered. Three-quarter crowns, also called onlays, are available when you do not need a full crown, but a filling is not enough to repair the damage. Onlays cover your tooth's cusp, the chewing surface, but they do not replace your tooth entirely.
Porcelain Crown Procedure
The process for traditional crowns can take a few weeks in total. First, you will need to have your dental condition treated. We will apply a local anesthetic if needed, such as for root canals or cavity drilling. We will then prepare your tooth by reshaping it and roughening the surface so that the dental cement, which holds the crown to the tooth, will attach to it easily. You may also receive a dental implant to hold the crown if you lose a tooth entirely.
In order to customize a crown for you, we will need to obtain a dental impression for our dental lab. Our lab will then create a mold of your tooth, which they will use to craft a custom porcelain crown. They will then ship it to us, and we will give you a call to schedule placement. You will have a temporary crown in the meantime.
During your second appointment, we will remove your temporary crown and place the permanent porcelain crown. Our dentist will check its fit and reshape and polish it as needed. We can then cement it in place using a permanent dental cement.
