What to Do in a Dental Emergency
If a tooth is knocked out
- Handle it by the crown, not the root
- Rinse gently with water if dirty. Do not scrub
- Place it back in the socket if possible, or store it in milk or saliva
- Get to our office immediately. Time matters
If a tooth is cracked or broken
- Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Call us right away
If you have severe swelling or signs of infection
- Do not wait. Dental infections can spread quickly
- If swelling is affecting your airway or spreading to your face or neck, go to the nearest emergency room
For all other emergencies
- Call us and describe your symptoms so we can prepare for your arrival
What to Expect During Your Emergency Visit
Call Us
Call our office and describe what you are experiencing. Our team will assess the urgency of your situation, get you on the schedule for the same day, and advise you on any immediate steps to take before you arrive.
Exam and Imaging
Dr. Cho performs a focused exam of the affected area using digital X-rays, intraoral imaging, and AI-assisted visualization to identify the source of the problem quickly and accurately. You will see the images and understand exactly what Dr. Cho is looking at before any treatment is discussed.
Pain Relief
Getting you comfortable is the first priority. Depending on your situation, Dr. Cho may:
- Administer local anesthesia to numb the affected area
- Offer oral sedation for patients with significant pain or anxiety
- Prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication to address infection or swelling
- Drain a dental abscess to relieve pressure and reduce infection
Nothing moves forward until your pain is under control.
Treatment
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Cho walks you through his findings and presents your options. Same-day treatment may include:
- Tooth-colored fillings to restore a chipped, cracked, or decayed tooth
- Crown placement or a temporary crown to protect a severely damaged tooth
- Root canal therapy to save an infected tooth and eliminate the source of pain
- Tooth extraction when a tooth cannot be saved, including wisdom teeth when necessary
- Scaling and root planing or soft tissue treatment if the emergency involves gum-related infection or injury
- Night guard fabrication if tooth damage is related to grinding, designed and produced in our on-site digital lab
Next Steps and Follow-Up
If full treatment requires more than one visit, you leave with a clear plan, a scheduled follow-up appointment, and everything you need to manage your symptoms in the meantime. No vague instructions, no unanswered questions.

How do I reach you for an emergency?
We are open Monday through Thursday. For after-hours emergencies, call our office and follow the instructions on our voicemail.
Can children be seen for dental emergencies?
Yes. We treat patients of all ages. If your child is experiencing dental pain, a broken tooth, or any other urgent concern, call us right away.
What if I am nervous about coming in?
Tell us when you call. Dr. Cho adjusts his approach for anxious patients from the moment they arrive. Oral sedation is available for patients who need additional support during treatment.
Will I need a follow-up appointment?
In many cases, yes. Depending on the situation, the same-day visit may focus on immediate relief and diagnosis, with definitive treatment scheduled as a follow-up. You will know exactly what comes next before you leave.
How much does an emergency visit cost?
New Life Dental offers same-day emergency exams for $150. If additional treatment is needed, Dr. Cho will review your options and associated costs before any work begins. We accept most major PPO insurance plans and offer multiple financing options for follow-up care.
Can you treat a dental abscess the same day?
Yes. A dental abscess is a serious infection that should not be ignored. We will evaluate the affected area, address your pain, and begin treatment the same day. Left untreated, dental infections can spread and become a medical emergency.
What if my emergency happens after hours?
Call our office and follow the instructions on our voicemail. If you are experiencing severe swelling affecting your airway, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or significant facial trauma, go to the nearest emergency room.
Is a knocked-out tooth really a dental emergency?
Yes, and time is critical. A knocked-out permanent tooth has the best chance of being saved if you reach a dentist within 30 to 60 minutes. Call us immediately.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Any situation involving severe pain, swelling, a knocked-out tooth, a broken restoration, or signs of infection qualifies. If you are unsure, call us and describe your symptoms. We will help you determine how urgently you need to be seen.
How quickly can I be seen for a dental emergency?
Our goal is to see every emergency patient the same day they call. Contact us as early as possible to secure same-day availability.
